Margate is perfect for young families, with plenty of free activities to keep the little ones entertained. It’s also an ideal spot for a romantic couples’ trip or a fun girls’ weekend, thanks to its amazing cocktail bars and restaurants.
Best Things to Do in Margate
Dreamland Margate
I kicked off my visit at Dreamland, the iconic retro amusement park. Entry is free, but rides cost £3 each, or I could grab a pack of 20 tokens for £40, which I found to be a great deal. I loved the vintage rides, arcade games, and the roller disco. The Ferris wheel offered stunning views of the sea—definitely a highlight of my trip!
Turner Contemporary
Next, I headed to the Turner Contemporary art gallery, named after the famous landscape painter J.M.W. Turner. I was thrilled to find that entry to all exhibitions is free! The gallery, located right on Margate Harbour, is a must-see for any art lover.
Margate Main Sands
After soaking in some culture, I strolled over to Margate’s main beach. The golden sand and bustling promenade were perfect for unwinding. I grabbed some fish and chips from Beach Buoys and found the perfect spot on the steps to enjoy my meal while watching the sunset.
Vintage Shopping
A stroll down King Street led me to a treasure trove of unique boutiques. I loved exploring shops like Breuer & Dawson, Madam Popoff Vintage, and Handsome Freaks, where I found some fantastic retro clothing and quirky collectibles.
The Shell Grotto
I couldn’t miss the Shell Grotto, an astonishing underground network of tunnels adorned with over 4.6 million seashells. Discovered by accident in 1835, this enchanting grotto captivated me with its intricate patterns and designs. Admission was just £4.50, and it was well worth it.
Botany Bay
For some natural beauty, I took a one-hour coastal walk from Margate Harbour to Botany Bay. The serene beach, framed by stunning white chalk cliffs, was a perfect spot for relaxation. Alternatively, it’s just a 10-minute drive with plenty of free parking available.
The Crab Museum
One of the highlights of my trip was the quirky Crab Museum, a free attraction dedicated to crabs and marine life. The interactive displays and hilarious dioramas depicting crabs in various historical scenarios were a delightful surprise!
